Growing up in Pickerington, Ohio, Jason Barr demonstrated the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and in a relatable manner. He developed the skills to communicate effectively through his high school job at a grocery store and later working in retail management.
As a college student, Barr was drawn to professors with engaging personalities and teaching styles. He admired the way they explained the curriculum so students could easily learn and understand, a practice that he models in his classroom.
Their ability to engage students and foster interest in the material served as a significant source of inspiration, said Barr. My goal is to make education a unique, enjoyable and impactful experience for my students.
Barr considered teaching mathematics before changing his focus to geoscience, where he found his passion. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Geography with a minor in geology, a Master of Science in Earth Science Education and a Master of Arts/Education in Earth Sciences and Geology. He also completed all but the dissertation for a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in Geoscience.
After 16 years as a high school science educator, Barr achieved his dream profession as a college science educator. He joined 窪蹋勛圖厙, Manatee-Sarasota (窪蹋勛圖厙) as an adjunct instructor in the Natural Science Department in January 2021 and was promoted to instructor in August 2024.
In his role, Barr teaches earth space science, environmental science and oceanography at 窪蹋勛圖厙 Venice and online, serves as course coordinator and on college committees, and provides support for faculty and department operations. He is also involved with national science organizations and has helped lead efforts to expand the colleges natural science offerings.
Through collaboration with 窪蹋勛圖厙 leadership, administration and other stakeholders, Barr worked with the National Weather Service Tampa Bay, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Florida Atlantic University (FAU) on the installation of a new free, professional-grade .
The system is one of the few in the Tampa Bay area, maintained by FAU and broadcasting live data on local atmospheric conditions that will be analyzed in the colleges science and mathematics classes.
“This weather station is more than just a collection of instruments; its a gateway to discovery and learning, Barr said. For our science students, it provides invaluable hands-on experience. For the college and community, it offers real-time weather insights that can inform daily life and foster greater appreciation for the science of weather.”
Barr also worked with the college to reinstate an Introduction to Meteorology course, which he will teach as well as a new geology course starting in Fall 2027.
Given my academic background and passion for weather and climate, this course was a natural addition to our curriculum, complementing existing offerings and addressing student demand for more comprehensive meteorological education, which is particularly relevant in our Gulf Coast regions climate zone, said Barr.

窪蹋勛圖厙 has given me the confidence and support to explore new ideas and projects aimed at enhancing my courses and the overall student experience, Barr said. The kindness and professionalism displayed across all departments make it a welcoming place to work and learn.
To do well in classes and college, Barr encourages students to be adaptable, focused and good-natured.
My advice to new students is to approach their academic journey with an open mind and a willingness to adapt to different teaching styles and perspectives, said Barr. Staying organized, managing their workload effectively and avoiding procrastination are essential for success. It is also important to be honest, courteous, respectful and kind to others.
Outside of the classroom, Barr enjoys 1980s pop culture, science fiction and comic books, spending time outdoors with his family and two chocolate Labrador retrievers, listening to, playing and producing music, observing weather patterns and celestial phenomena, and hearing nature, especially during thunderstorms.
Barr is grateful for his good health and wellness, support from his family and friends and his parents seeing him fulfill his dream career. He hopes his students remember how he made learning science fun, entertaining and enlightening and his daughter recognizes how he did his best to be a dedicated, supportive father.
In the future, Barr wants to complete personal projects to pass on to his daughter and new generations as well as to travel to the western United States and Europe.
I spent a month in Montana during graduate school, and it remains one of the most beautiful and peaceful experiences of my life, Barr said. I have admired my grandparents’ travels across Germany, where they were from, as well as Scotland, Wales and the Scandinavian area. Those regions hold personal and ancestral significance, and I would love to explore them to connect with my heritage.
